From reading around the forum a bit here it seems like the Complete Mafia game is very new. Like, made-in-the-last-eight-months new. I was just able to sample it a bit by playing a couple games at Origins a week ago. Heck, it is a pretty awesome game for being that new.

One game was on the east coast and the second on the west and I have to say...I thought the game was way better than anything I've played before. Maybe it was because of the awesome gamemastering but I don't know. Nonetheless, I'm really hoping to be able to play it again...and often.

Anyway, back to my questions: How old is this game anyway? and What is the fastest way to learn as much as possible about the world it is set in?

Well, the game actually came out in 2005-2006 from Living Room Games. Sadly, it did not get the publicity I was expecting, but nonetheless, I continued to promote it until finally coming out with the expanded supplement for the West Coast just last month. There is also a pending LARP which we've been testing at DEXCON on the East Coast. This year, there may be two games of live action Mafia running.

Anyhow, for questions, feel free to post here. All you really need to remember about the settings is that New Milan is a typical East Coast American city like Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York or Boston. Las Deudas is the West Coast city and is in the desert like Reno or Las Vegas. New Milan is mostly run by the Mafia, with the Russians encroaching on turf every day. Las Deudas is run by the Yakuza and the Triad, with the Mafia slowly being pushed out. Of course, players may alter the outcome of that according to their campaign. The central nexus points for links and info is here and on my webpage here:

http://www.thefixsite.com/completemafia/MafiaMenu.html

The links will take you the the Living Room Games website, which has about 60 adventures and supplements for New Milan (although many are adaptable for any setting). My site has the adventures for Las Deudas. Currently, there are six downloads, but more to come. You can get the first book through Living Room Games (www.lrgames.com) and the download from the Le Games (www.thelegames.com). I also have copies available at gaming conventions.

The game itself emphasizes the role playing, especially that of the criminal underworld. Even though the organize crime figures commit crimes, they have rules (hey, without rules, we're no different then the animals, right?). The rules are mostly adapted to role-playing. It's not always about what you have, but what your opponents THINK you have. Unlike other role-playing games that reward you for being heroic, Complete Mafia rewards players that cut the best corners. In Complete Mafia, often the ends will justify any means. So players that work D&D rules so that their paladins can wipe out whole villages can go suck a Holy Avenger. In Complete Mafia, you either maintain your respect and your power or suffer the consequences.

Ultimately, Complete Mafia is modern day fantasy. Your characters can do what they want, take what they want and the players don't have to suffer the consquences. It's a helluva lot more fun to play the bad guys than the good guys. Modern day gangsters in the role-playing sense are nothing more than ruthless D&D players unleashed with modern equipment. The challenge is often how long you can last in such a dog-eat-dog world.

Mr. D.

Sweetness. Yeah, I definitely enjoyed being the "bad guys" during the game at Origins. My only regret is not being able to torture one of the targets more.

East Coast?! Waggh...I'm all the way in Chicago so the only really big cons I get to go to are Origins and GenCon. Please tell me someone is running at GenCon! I heard that the GM that had run the game at Origins is going to be...out of commission?...for quite some time so I was really dissappointed because he was AMAZING at it. My friends and I had SO much fun!

Actually, I had heard that you had been at CodCon this past...April...I believe. Do you normally come this way to be at smaller cons?

It depends on my schedule. Besides Dexcon on the East Coast, the next one for me is Dragon Con in Atlanta (where I will be doing four game slots). Beyond that, it's up in the air right now, but if you hear of any conventions out your way looking for guests, don't keep it to yourself.

BTW, I highly recommend Dragon Con http://www.dragoncon.org.

Unfortunately, school starts at the end of August and I'm not sure there is really any way for me to get to Atlanta. I'll have to try in later years though.

And yeah, I'll totally mention it if I hear about any upcoming cons.
